It is with profound sorrow that we share the passing of Robert E. Gilbert, The Edward W. Brooke professor of Political Science at Northeastern University.
Born in the Bronx on October 20, 1939, to Veronica and Emile P. Gilbert. Robert passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at Valley Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Robert graduated from Fordham Prep and received his BA and MA from Fordham University. In 1965, he received his PhD from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. After Boston College, he taught at Northeastern University for 44 Years. For twelve of those years, he was Chairman of the Political Science Department.
He is the author of several books and numerous journal articles published in the United States and abroad. His main teaching interests and research were in American Politics, more specifically, the presidency and how it affected the health of those elected.
He is survived by his sister, Marilyn Finning (Jack) of Pearl River, NY; nephews, John Finning of NYC and Greg Finning (Sally)of Ridgewood, NJ, and niece, Kristin Cappello (Rob) of Garden City NY.
Calling hours to celebrate Robert's life will be held on Thursday, May 29th, from 3 to 7 PM at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home, 100 Franklin Ave. Pearl River, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 AM, Friday May 30th at St. Margaret of Antioch R.C. Church. Entombment will follow at Ascension Cemetery.
