Peter Dunne, of Orangeburg, NY, passed away on July 21, 2024, at the age of 79. He was born in Manhattan, NY, on October 6, 1944, to Peter and Dorothy(Fitzpatrick) Dunne. Peter grew up in Washington Heights, where he made lifelong friends who remained close to him throughout his life.
After graduating from high school, Peter joined the Army in November 1962, serving with the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 82nd Airborne Division. He said the first 9 times he ever flew on a plane he jumped out. He was honorably discharged in October 1968. Following his military service, Peter joined the NYPD, where he dedicated 20 years of his life. He began his career at the 44th Precinct and spent the majority of his time in Bronx Narcotics, retiring as a Sergeant in 1989.
After retiring from the police department, Peter worked in security for a while before fully retiring. He became an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) in Pearl River, where he was instrumental in organizing fundraiser and golf outings. He was particularly proud of founding the Family Fund, which supports local families in need during the holidays. Peter was also a familiar face behind the bar on Mondays and Fridays. He was also a member of The American Legion post 329 and the Pearl River Elks. Peter was an avid reader, he would watch any sport on TV, enjoyed playing golf and was known for his sense of humor and ability to tell a story. (We cannot confirm or deny if the stories were true.)
Peter is survived by his two daughters, Suzanne and Jennifer, both of Nyack; his sister, Bonnie Dunne-Martin, of Bonita Springs, FL; his sister-in-law, Gabrielle Dunne; his niece, Elizabeth Fasolakis (Chris); his grandnephew, Christopher, and grandniece, Makayla, all of East Rockaway, along with many cousins and lifelong friends. He is also survived by his ex-wife, Diane, of Pearl River; his brother-in-law, Peter Gaarn (Nancy); his nephews, Tyler, Ryan, and Keaton; his niece, Whitney; and his grandnieces, Zoe and Piper, all of Soquel, CA. Peter was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Dorothy, his brothers, Robert (Gabrielle) and Stephen, and his brother-in-law Gary (Bonnie).
