Michael J. McNamara died peacefully on November 29th. He was 88 years old. Mike was born in Manhattan, NY to Clare (Martin) and Michael McNamara on January 27, 1936.
Mike attended St. Dominic’s Home in Orangeburg, NY, St Agnes High School in NYC and Far Rockaway High School. After high school, he became a proud member of the US Marine Corp. In 1962, he became a dedicated member of the FDNY where he served for 35 years at Engine 42, Engine 95 Ladder 36 and Engine 70. During the 1970’s, Mike also joined the Army National Guard in Orangeburg NY. In retirement, he volunteered with the Pearl River Excelsior Fire Dept. and played on their softball team.
He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Jane (Mahoney) and his children Janet (Sean) Barron, Thomas McNamara, Robert (Lara) McNamara, John (Cathy) McNamara, and Jeanne (Jason) Conkin. He was the ultimate Grandpa ‘Mc’ to Kelly, Courtney and Michael Barron, Steven McNamara, Martin Flynn, Lila McNamara, Kaitlyn and Megan McNamara, Liz (Nick) Israel, Jay, Ben and Clare Conkin and great grandpa to Lena and Matias Israel. Cousin Mary Moorehead as well as niece Clare (Troy) Johnson and nephews Philip (Ana) Chiafalo, Edward Chiafalo and James Mahoney. He is predeceased by his son Michael R. McNamara and sisters Clare Lanzano and Kathleen McNamara and niece Carolann Chiafalo.
Mike (Mc) was an avid sportsman who loved coaching little league and participating on numerous softball teams, FDNY hockey team, basketball leagues, road races and building his Field of Dreams. He also enjoyed many winters in Delray Beach, Fla. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, Emerald Society, Florian Society, Ancient Order of Hibernians and American Legion. But his greatest love was his family.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2024 from 4-8pm at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home Pearl River, NY. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, December 6, 2024, 11:30am at St. Anthony’s Church Nanuet, NY 10954. Followed by interment at St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
