Maurice B. Spivak of Bardonia, New York, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Sunday, October 13th. He was 89 years old.
After working many years as a comptroller for various publishing companies, Maurice founded Clarkstown Coin & Jewelry in 1973. He turned his love of numistmatics into a thriving local business, which still succeeds today. He took great pride in his store and enjoyed helping thousand of customers over a half-century.
Mr. Spivak was born on May 29th, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York to Joseph and Claire (Coltun) Spivak. He graduated Lafayette high school in 1953 and enlisted into the U.S. Army, serving three years stateside. Maurice credited the army with providing him a positive structure that remained with him his entire life. He then attended Brooklyn College and City College, earning his degree in accounting.
On June 6, 1959, he married Susie R. James, and then settled in Rockland County where they built a beautiful life together. Upon the passing of Susie in 2007, Maurice enjoyed many happy years with his parter and devoted companion, Martha Hackett.
Maurice, known as Sonny to those close to him, he will be most remembered for his love of family and country. His honesty and ethics were beyond reproach. He loved European and American history, and could tell you every historical fact over the past 5000 years. He followed politics and current events closely, and he was a true patriot. Maurice loved his annual family vacations to the Island of St. John in the Virgin Islands. He loved sports and followed the Atlanta Braves and the New England Patriots, and was most passionate about the New York Boulders baseball team, where he seldom missed a game. He also enjoyed watching Johns Hopkins University football games, where his grandson Jake plays.
But most of all, Maurice loved to see and spend time with his cherished children and grandchildren. He is survived by his children Lance King, Dara and Andy (Sperber), Laura and Scott (Nodelman) and Seth and Lisa Spivak. Grandchildren Taylor, Madison, Jared,Jake, Danielle and Emily.
Services will be held on Thursday, October 17th at the Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home in Pearl River, NY from 10am - 12pm. Burial to follow at the Rockland Cemetery in Orangeburg, NY. The family requests donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
