Maurice Murphy Obituary

Maurice “Mossie” Murphy passed away on Sunday, August 7th 2022 after 92 years surrounded by his family.  He was born April 3, 1930 to Ellen (nee Dwyer) and John Murphy in Farranfore, Knockaderry, Co. Kerry, Ireland.  Maurice came to America in February of 1948 along with his brother, Michael.  Shortly after arrival in New York he met his wife of 71 years, Margie (nee Clifford) from Kanturk, Co Cork and they were married in December of 1950.  They settled into the Washington Heights section of Manhattan and had two sons, Sean and Brendan.   In 1971, they moved to Pearl River, NY where they lived for 25 years until retiring to Tampa, Florida.

After arriving in New York, Maurice enlisted in the United States Army for two years, and then went to work as a bus mechanic for M.A.B.S.T.O.A. where he worked for 30 years.  After moving to Pearl River, he enjoyed being a part of the Gaelic Golf Club, the Pearl River Elks, and the American Legion.  During their retirement, Maurice and Margie enjoyed spending their summers in Ireland, visiting their brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, playing golf at the Tralee Country Club, and of course enjoying a few pints in local establishments.  An avid Kerry Football Fan, he was happy to see Kerry hoisting the Sam Maguire the week before he passed.

Maurice is survived by his wife of 71 years, Margie.  His two sons and daughter-in-laws, Sean and Peggy Murphy of Pearl River, NY and Brendan and Kathie Murphy of Tampa, Florida.  He’s also survived by his four grandchildren Kerry (Ted) Dolan, Patrick Murphy, Brendan Murphy, and Kelly Murphy.  He was also delighted to see the birth of his two great grandsons, Daniel and Jack Dolan.  Mossie is also survived by his sister, Helen O’Shea, of Firies, Co. Kerry, Ireland, his sister-in-laws Bridie Murphy of Morristown, NJ, Josephine Murphy of Malahide, Co. Dublin, and Josephine Murphy of Lucan, Co. Dublin. as well as many beloved nieces and nephews in Kerry, Dublin, and America.  He is predeceased by nine brothers and sisters.

Maurice was always up for a joke and was often described as “a character.”  He will be fondly and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.  A mass celebrating his life will be held 10:30 AM, Friday September 9, 2022 at St Aedan R.C. Church 23 Reld Drive Pearl River, NY.
