Mary Marotta Obituary

Mary Marotta, née Mulvanerton, a long time resident of Pearl River, NY and more recently Nyack, NY, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2021.

Mary was born on January 11, 1931 in Jersey City NJ, the daughter of Anna Brennan Mulvanerton, a home maker, and Joseph V. Mulvanerton, a precinct captain in the Jersey City police department. Mary was educated at Sacred Heart Elementary School and The Academy of St. Aloysius both in Jersey City. After graduation she worked for an employment agency before meeting and marrying her husband Michael Marotta.

Mr. Marotta, also of Jersey City, was a chemist at Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River where the couple chose to live and raise their family. Mary loved Pearl River making wonderful lifelong friends. Over the years she was active in her community and in her parish of St Margaret.

When her youngest child went to school Mary returned to the workforce first as a nursery school teacher and then later as a real estate agent. She was a natural with the children who adored her and she was equally successful in the business world as a realtor.

Mary was a voracious reader and was never without a book. It was a passion that she eagerly shared with her children and grandchildren by reading to them all from a very young age. Mere Mere, as she became known, took great interest and pleasure in the lives of her grandchildren and they in turn treasured her. She also enjoyed gardening, playing canasta and dominoes with her friends, and travel, especially the trips she made to Ireland and Italy.

After living in Pearl River for over 60 years, Mary moved to Nyack where she and her dearest friend June Tonelli resided in adjacent apartments. Mary and June, friends since sixth grade, were united as family when Mary’s daughter and June’s son married. As such they shared three grandchildren and six great grandchildren together!

Mary is predeceased by her husband Michael as well as her sisters Helen Minissale and Anne Daly and her brother Joseph Mulvanerton. She is survived by her children, Michele Jaworski (James), Maureen Tonelli (Fred), Mark Marotta (Diane), and Monica Bosco (David); by her grandchildren, Daniel Tonelli (Corinn), Julia Tonelli Kemmlein (Michael), Allie Tonelli (Scott Wasser), Christian Marotta (Melissa Morales), Caroline Marotta and Michael Jaworski; by her great grandchildren, Avery and Logan Tonelli, Leila and Quentin Kemmlein, George and Matteo Wasser; by her sister in law Rosemary Mulvanerton and by three generations of nieces and nephews.
