Longtime Pearl River resident Mary Breen passed away peacefully in Pearl River, New York on March 15th, 2022. Mary was a sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, and she was loved by many, many people.
Mary was born on May 9th, 1936 in New York City. She was the eldest daughter of Philip and Margaret Canning, recently arrived immigrants from County Donegal in Ireland. Mary was followed by her sister, Kay; her brother, Hughie; and her sister, Margie. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1954.
Mary met her future husband, Daniel Breen, at a dance, and they were married on May 17th, 1958. Mary and Dan had three children while they lived in the Bronx: Michael, Teresa, and Eileen.
In 1962, Mary and Dan decided to buy a home in the "country," and they moved to their first home in Pearl River on Martin Place, where they began their new life by arriving by bus that day.
With the addition of two more children, Maryann and Steven, they moved to a bigger home on Brightwood Avenue. Mary resided at her Brightwood Avenue home until she eventually moved into the Brightview Residential Assisted Living Home in Pearl River.
Mary filled her time with taking care of Dan, her children, and grandchildren; working at Sears for many years; being a dedicated parishioner at Saint Margaret's Church; and being a wonderful friend and relative to so many. She loved to pray for others; she loved to laugh; and she was a beautiful and loving person. She will be truly missed by all.
Mary is survived by her five children: Michael, Teresa (Jimmy), Eileen (John), Maryann (Rich), and Steven (Michele); her eight grandchildren: Ryan, Dylan, Nicholas, Jacquelyn, Joseph, John Paul, and Kristen; and her three great grandchildren: Vaughn, Madison, and August. She is survived by her brother, Hughie, and her sister, Margie. She was preceded in death by her parents, Philip and Margaret; her husband, Dan; and her beloved sister, Kay.
A viewing will take place on Tuesday, March 22nd, at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home in Pearl River from 4-8. A funeral mass will take place at 10:00 on Wednesday, March 23rd at St. Margaret's Church in Pearl River. Interment will take place at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Nanuet, New York.
The family would like to thank the caring and loving staff at the Brightview Assisted Care Facility and the Hospice of Rockland County for Mary's excellent care. Donations in Mary's name can be made to the Alzheimer's Association or The Hospice of Rockland County.
