Marjorie “Bonnie” Tummons Obituary

Marjorie “Bonnie” Schuyler Tummons, age 100, died January 2, 2019 following a brief illness. She was born on August 3, 1918 to Godfrey Baker and Marjory Kerr Baker in Rochester, NY.  Bonnie grew up on a pigeon farm in Newfield, NJ.  She graduated from Cornell University in 1940 and until her marriage was a social worker in the probation office of the county courthouse in Woodbury, NJ.  On May 29, 1943 she married Robert Tummons who predeceased her.  Bob Tummons traveled throughout the country for his work and together the couple lived in Texas, Wyoming, California, and New Jersey before settling in Suffern in 1951.  She later followed her husband to postings in Germany, France, England and Indonesia.

Bonnie was a devoted mother to her children, especially her daughter Carol who was born with cerebral palsy.  Together with other parents of special needs children, Bonnie and Bob supported Jawonio to provide schooling and enrichment for their children, and were later named as one of the Founding Families of that organization.

Throughout her years in Suffern, Bonnie was an active member of the Suffern United Methodist Church.  She gave of her time and talent to many local organizations and charities, including the Girl Scouts, United Way, Salvation Army, and the local soup kitchen. At the time of her death she was a resident of the Promenade at Blue Hill in Pearl River, NY where she served as president of the resident council.  Upon moving to Pearl River she joined the Pearl River United Methodist Church where she was warmly welcomed into fellowship.

Bonnie leaves to mourn her loss her son Donald Tummons of Uniontown, PA; daughter Barbara Lynn and son-in-law Edward Lynn of Ann Arbor, MI; grandson Jonathan Tummons and granddaughter-in-law A. J. Tummons of Pittsburgh, PA; granddaughter Jillian Tummons of Los Angeles, CA; and the mother of her grandchildren, Bernadette Tummons of Uniontown, PA.  In addition to her husband she was predeceased by her beloved daughter Carol Tummons, who died three weeks before Bonnie’s death.

Services will be held Wednesday, January 9, at 10:30 am at the Pearl River United Methodist Church, 130 Franklin Avenue, Pearl River, NY.  There will be a private burial.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Bonnie’s memory may be made to the Venture Foundation, 230 Route 340, Suite 102A, Sparkill, NY 10976 or the Pearl River United Methodist Church, 130 Franklin Avenue, Pearl River, NY 10965.
