Lucy Marie (Tommie) Ahrens

July 28, 1925 ~ December 7, 2021 (age 96)

Obituary

Lucy Marie (Tommie) Ahrens passed peacefully on December 7, 2021, at the age of 96.  Befitting their profound love and life partnership, it was ten years to the day since the death of  her husband of 66 years, George Raymond Ahrens.

Born Lucy Marie Sawyer on July 28, 1925, Tommie (as she was known) was daughter of Charles Marshall Sawyer and Louise Sawyer.  She grew up in Missouri, and was training to become a nurse in Omaha, Nebraska when she met George, a strapping navigator in the Army Air Corps during World War II.  They fast fell in love, she left nursing school, they married, and then traveled to their new home in Pearl River where George had been raised.  Tommie lived in Pearl River for 76 years.

Together, they raised two daughters, Charlou and Debbie, and a son, Raymond.   In addition to being a full-time mom, Tommie was a volunteer ambulance driver in Pearl River for many years.    She and George were active members and leaders in their Church (Pearl River United Methodist), in their golf community at Blue Hill, and in bridge events.  They epitomized the motto of Pearl River, “The Town of Friendly People.”   In later years, they loved to travel, whether jumping in the car to drive across the country or flying in cargo seats on an Air Force jet to Europe.  She was often seen sitting on her front porch, watching the neighbors walk by, and offering them her greetings.

Survived by brother Charles (Carol) Marshall Jr; daughter Charlou (Richard) Woodrow; son Ray (Sara) Ahrens; daughter Debra (Tom) Joyce; eight adored and adoring grandchildren – Danielle (Emily), Michael (Stacey), Dylan (Lily), Ryan, Kate (David), Stephanie (Ari), Justin (Amber), Meghann (Peter); 10 delightful great-grandchildren – Eli, Ari, Mikki Woodrow;  Henry, George Ahrens; Shiloh Barber; Addie, Marshall, Judah Joyce; Ellie Anderson -  and an 11th soon to arrive.

She lived a full and blessed life.  She will be buried next to her husband at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York.  The service is a private family gathering.   A memorial service will be held at a later date.    In lieu of flowers, contributions honoring Tommie Ahrens may be made to Pearl River United Methodist Church (130 Franklin Ave., Pearl River, NY 10965).
