Joseph DeMatte, age 91, of Pearl River, NY, passed away peacefully at the Joe Raso Hospice Residence on March 13, 2026. Born on March 19, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late William and Josephine DeMatte.
Joseph was a man of profound dedication to both his country and his city. He honorably served in the U.S. Air Force before beginning a 37-year career as a firefighter with the FDNY. His commitment to service extended into his local community as a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus and an active parishioner of St. Margaret’s Church.
Above all, Joseph was a devoted family man. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Angela; his two daughters, Suzanne Stimson and Doreen (Vince) Ventura; and his four cherished grandchildren: A.J. (Maggie), Vincent, Emily (Joe), and Tommy. He was also the proud great-grandfather of Luca and Clara and a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Joseph was predeceased by his siblings, William Jr., Arthur, and Barbara Pollock, as well as his son-in-law, Tom Stimson.
An avid traveler, Joseph enjoyed exploring the world, but his greatest joy was found at home, spending time with his family—especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his steadfast character and the legacy of love he leaves behind.
