Joseph Brosnan Obituary

Joseph Brosnan of Blauvelt, NY passed away peacefully on Monday October 6, 2025. He was born on August 26, 1932, in Coom, Gneevgullia, County Kerry, Ireland.  Joseph was the beloved son of the late Michael and Mary (O’Keefe) Brosnan. He was one of ten children, with two sisters (Mary and Joan) and seven brothers (John, Timothy, Patrick, Dennis, Michael, William and his twin Vincent).  While young, Joe spent time working in England before immigrating to the United States in the mid 1950s. He acclimated to his new home by working tirelessly and sharing a small apartment on the the upper east side of Manhattan with four of his brothers.  In New York he met Margaret Cunnane from Mayo, Ireland and began a relationship that included 67 years of marriage. They lived in the Bronx, then Queens and finally settled in Rockland County, NY in Blauvelt where they were devoted parents to five children.  Joe had a long career at Consolidated Edison, where his brother also worked, retiring in the 1990s after 43 years. He enjoyed being a hard-working union man and especially liked the camaraderie of his work crew.  Joe was a generous and gregarious man who cherished his many friends.  He was a hard worker who loved a good joke, arguing about politics, playing cards and discussing all things Irish. Joe was very much at home in Blauvelt and was especially happy to be a part of the Rockland Irish- American Cultural Center in Blauvelt. He spent many enjoyable hours there going to dances and social events, playing cards (he loved the game of “25”) and especially watching Gaelic football where he would cheer for his team from County Kerry, all while shouting “Up the Kingdom”.  After he retired he was able to take several trips to Ireland to watch the Kerry team play in person at the All-Ireland Championship in Dublin.

Joe is survived by his five children: Michael Brosnan of Miami Beach, FL; Mary Fitzgerald of West Nyack, NY; Joan Butterworth (Donald) of Pearl River, NY; Joseph  Brosnan of Orangeburg, NY; and Brendan Brosnan of Blauvelt, NY. He is also survived by his sister Joan Brosnan of Gneevgullia, Ireland.

A proud and devoted grandfather, Joe leaves behind eleven cherished grandchildren: Donald Jr. (Lisa), Thomas (Adrianna), Julia and Matthew Butterworth; Devin Brosnan; Christopher (Luiza), Brian, Kaleigh and Daniel Fitzgerald; and Isabella and Joseph Brosnan. He was also blessed with one great-grandchild, Nicholas Butterworth, son of Donald Jr. and Lisa.  He will be missed and fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.  Joe’s devotion to faith and family, his work ethic and pride in both his adopted and native countries will be remembered by all who knew him.
