John “Jack” Murphy of Pearl River, N.Y. passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2024. He was 91.
The son of immigrants from County Kerry, Ireland, Jack was raised on Manhattans westside. He attended Holy Name Grammar School and graduated from the Christian Brothers Rice High School.
In 1953, Jack served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He never complained of the cold after serving in Korea. All five Murphy sons served their country in the U.S. Army.
Jack was a member of the NYPD for 33 years (1957-1990). He served in several commands in Manhattan and the Bronx N.Y. He was a retired Sergeant.
After his police service, Jack worked for Bank of America in the World Trade Center in N.Y.C.
Jack was known for his friendly demeanor and quick wit. He loved his family, friends and country. An avid sports fan he enjoyed Baseball (N.Y. Mets), Football and Boxing. A sprinter as a youngster, Jack rediscovered running in his 40’s and continued running into his 50’s. He was a member of the NYPD Running Club and participated in state and International Police Olympics winning numerous awards.
Jack was a member of the John H. Secor Post 329 American Legion in Pearl River, NY, Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 3 in Pearl River, N.Y. and the Rockland County Shields (member since 1966).
Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife Helen and his sister Maureen, brothers Michael, Thomas and Jeremiah. He is survived by his son John and wife Kathleen and grandchildren Aileen and Nessa. He is also survived by his brother Charles and numerous nephews and nieces.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at St. Aedan R.C. Church Pearl River, NY. Burial will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery, Nanuet, NY.
Visiting will be held Monday, September 23, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home Inc. Pearl River, NY
