John P O'Malley

John P. O’Malley, a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, respected law enforcement investigator, and lifelong New Yorker, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was 73 years old.

Born on October 20, 1952, John was the son of John B. O’Malley and Marion Hastings. He was born and raised in the Clason Point section of the Bronx, New York, where he developed the values of hard work, loyalty, and resilience that would define his life.

John proudly served the people of New York throughout an extraordinary career in law enforcement. He spent more than 20 years with the New York City Police Department, where he became one of the Bronx’s most respected homicide detectives. Known for his integrity, professionalism, and investigative skill, John earned the admiration of colleagues throughout the department and was widely regarded as a “detective’s detective.”

Following his retirement from the NYPD, John continued his commitment to justice as an investigator with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. There, he once again distinguished himself through his dedication, experience, and unwavering ethical standards, earning the respect of prosecutors, agents, and fellow investigators alike.

While his career was remarkable, John’s greatest pride was always his family. He was the beloved husband of Annie O’Malley (née Doherty), whom he married on October 12, 1979. Together they built a life centered on love, laughter, and unwavering devotion, raising their family in Pearl River, New York.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Annie; his son, John O'Malley and his wife, Katie, and their children, Fiona, John, and James; his son, Dan O'Malley, and his sons, Ryan and Jack, whose mother, Amanda, remained an important part of the family's life; his loving sisters, Susan Gorassi (Arthur) and Kathleen Kelleher (d. Thomas); along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, dear friends, and former colleagues who will forever cherish his memory.

Those who knew John will remember not only his distinguished career but also his larger-than-life personality. He had a quick wit, an infectious sense of humor, and an unmatched ability to make people laugh. A master storyteller and legendary prankster, John had a way of making every room brighter simply by being in it.

After growing up in the Bronx, John and Annie made Pearl River, New York, their home, where they raised their family and built a life filled with love, laughter, and lasting friendships. John was a proud lifetime member of the Pearl River Elks Lodge No. 2041, where he enjoyed the camaraderie and friendships that reflected his deep connection to the community he called home.

To the law enforcement community, John will be remembered as a legendary investigator whose integrity, courage, and commitment to justice set the standard for others to follow. But to those who loved him most, his greatest title was not Detective or Investigator—it was simply “GP.” His grandchildren never saw the legendary detective the rest of the world admired; they knew the man who loved them unconditionally, made them laugh endlessly, and was always there for them. It was the title he cherished most.

John’s legacy will live on not only through the cases he solved and the lives he touched in public service, but through the family he loved so deeply. He will be remembered for his honor, humility, humor, and unwavering devotion to those closest to him. He will be profoundly missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, John’s family kindly requests that memorial donations be made in his honor to one of his favorite charities, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Alternatively, honoring John’s legacy by donating blood, a cause he supported often and with great pride, would be a meaningful tribute to his memory.
