John F Madigan

John F. Madigan  born in NYC April 30, 1944 to Bill and Peg Madigan.  He grew up in the Kingsbridge area of the Bronx.  After attending Bishop Dubois High School, he enlisted in the Marines in 1963 and was deployed to Okinawa, Japan, and Vietnam. Upon returning home in 1967, he joined the New York City Police Department.  It was evident that this was his calling after he was promoted to Sergeant after just three short years.  As a Lieutenant, he was chosen to attend the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, as a representative of the New York City Police Department. John finished his career at the Police Academy as a Lieutenant.

Through all of these adventures, the love of his life was always by his side.  John proposed to a girl from OLA who had stolen his heart at the Loures Ice Cream Shoppe, located at 231st St and Broadway.  He married Charlotte “Charlie” Lent on March 1, 1969. They eventually settled in Pearl River, where they went on to raise 3 children. His example of serving New York City would impact his 2 sons so much so that they would eventually follow in his footsteps and both became New York City Police Officers, as would his grandson.

John believed in being part of a community and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was one of the 1st members of the Rockland County Shields and belonged to the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 3, of Pearl River.  He was even an aide to the Grand Marshal one year. 

John enjoyed retired life and loved spending time with family and friends.  He loved going on cruises with friends from the old neighborhood, golfing trips with the guys, which always ended on the 19th hole, excursions upstate to Charlie Murphy’s house, and his Romeo luncheons.  Anyone who knew John knew he was happiest spending time with his grandchildren. He treasured his many trips to Disney with them.

A true gentleman and scholar. He loved his God, his country and his family.  He leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Charlotte Madigan of Pearl River; son William and wife Regina of Goshen, NY; daughter Ritamary Mc Ccabe and husband Jimmy of Pearl River; son John Madigan and wife Chrissy of Florida, NY; and 9 loving grandchildren, Billy, Sarah, Charlotte, Niamh, Jimmy, Shannon, Rita, Megan and Grace.
