John Cummins

John Noel Cummins of Pearl River, NY, a retired NYC Transit Police Officer, died on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at his home after a long, courageous battle with Spinal Stenosis and Parkinson’s Disease. He was 80 years of age.

Mr. Cummins worked as a Police Officer for the NYC Transit Police Department in Harlem and South Bronx in the 70’s, 80’s, and early 90’s. He served with Transit Police in ‘District 3’ for 23 years before retiring in 1993 and working as a stonemason. 

Mr. Cummins was born on December 19, 1941 in Ahascragh, Co. Galway, Ireland, to Jack and Eileen Cummins. At the age of 20, he immigrated to the Bronx and moved to Pearl River in 1972 where he remained a resident for the next 50 years.

Mr. Cummins will be remembered for being a quiet, hard-working man with a very firm handshake, sharp wit, and a dry sense of humor. He loved the outdoors, to hunt, fish, and grow his tomatoes. He also volunteered for many years as a coach for the Pearl River Little League, winning two championships during his tenure. 

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alice (neé Smyth), his five sons: Seàn, Noel, Kieran, Michael, Brian; his seven grandchildren; his brothers Michael, in Liverpool, England; Maurice, Martin, and Malachy in London, England., Myles in Co. Clare, Ireland, and his sister Mary in Galway, Ireland. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Muriel Molloy of Pearl River, and Merilyn Cummins in Galway. 

Calling hours are Thursday, December 8th, from 5pm to 9pm at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home in Pearl River. A Mass of Christian burial will be on Friday, December 9th at  11:15am at St. Margaret’s Church, 115 W. Central Ave, Pearl River NY, 10965. Interment will follow at Ascension Cemetery, in Airmont, NY.
