Joan Schaefer Obituary

Joan A. Schaefer, a beloved resident of Pearl River, North Carolina, and Park Ridge, NJ, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2023, at Valley Hospital. She was 89 years old.

Joan was born on July 22, 1933, in Spring Valley, NY, to Frederick and Alberta Hollands (nee Van Horn). She received her high school education in Spring Valley, where she actively participated in the Chorus and Theater group, showcasing her beautiful voice and enjoyment for the performing arts.

After completing her education, Joan married John Schaefer of Bronx, NY and dedicated herself to raising her four children as a stay-at-home mother.  Later in life, she ventured into the workforce, starting part-time work for an attorney before transitioning to become a Court Secretary for Westchester County in White Plains, NY dedicating 12 years of service before her well-deserved retirement in 1991.

Joan's life was filled with joy and love, centered around her family and her cherished home in North Carolina. She possessed a sharp wit and a strong determination to remain independent after her husband passed away.

In her free time, Joan pursued various hobbies and pastimes that brought her immense satisfaction. She was an avid knitter, creating beautiful pieces she created for her children and grandchildren. Additionally, she had a voracious appetite for reading, indulging in numerous books that culminated in a long booklist.  Joan also found solace and creativity in needlework, large puzzles, and various arts and crafts.  Joan will be most remembered for her love of animals, especially her beloved 18 year old cat Mitzy.

Joan is survived by her four children and their spouses, ten grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish the memories they shared with her. Her husband, John Schaefer, predeceased her in 2005, leaving a void in her heart that she carried with grace and strength.

Joan A. Schaefer will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. Her legacy of love, warmth, and appreciation for her family that was very evident in her last years will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in eternal peace.
