Ilse Zwyhun of Pearl River, New York passed away peacefully Wednesday,
April 15, 2020 at Woodcliff Lake Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was
84. She was born July 11, 1935 in Hannover Germany, daughter of the
late Ella and Paul Achenbach. Ilse was a dedicated homemaker, dog lover,
gardener, and tireless devotee helping friends in need of a meal or
companionship. Her spectacular cooking for her hungry sons will long be
remembered. Ilse was one of Jehovah's Witnesses and attended the West
Nyack Congregation. On April 4, 1956 she married Josef in Hannover,
Germany. They then emigrated to the United States on March 30, 1957 with
the help of the Tolstoy Farm Foundation. Alexandra Tolstaya, youngest
daughter of the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy started this foundation to
help Soviet displaced persons, dissidents, and former Soviet citizens to
settle in the West. Mrs. Zwyhun had been a resident of Pearl River for
60 years. She is survived by her two sons Joe (Denise Sullivan) of Pearl
River and Nestor (Linda) of Ridgewood, New Jersey; two grandchildren
Kelsey (fiance Michael Johnson) and Peter, her sisters Irmgardt and
Christa. She was predeceased by her husband Josef, and her siblings
Agarn, Erwin, Helmut, Ellie as well as her two favorite dogs Schatzi
and Tuffy. Due to the pandemic, services will be scheduled for a later
date.
