Harold "Hal" Mathieson Obituary

Harold “Hal” Mathieson of Nanuet, NY passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, March 6, 2020.  He was 92.

Hal was born February 1, 1928 in Jersey City, NJ to Leander and Sofia Mathieson.   He was raised in the Bronx and moved to Rockland County in 1962.

He was educated in the Bronx and graduated from DeWitt Clinton HS in 1946.  He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from SUNY Brockport and a Master’s degree in Education and received many educational honors and received Lifetime Principal’s License Achievement degree.  Mr. Mathieson was a Physical Education and Coach for the Mount Vernon School District for 30 years before retiring in 1984. His technical knowledge in the Math and Sciences led him to a teaching position with the Monnie S. Graham School in Mt. Vernon. He taught Algebra, Science, Anatomy and Physical Education.  Hal’s enthusiasm and ability qualified him as a coach.  He coached the football and basketball teams, and was voted Coach of the Year for 10 years.  In the evenings and during the summer he tutored naturalized citizens.  Ken Singleton, the famous baseball player and announcer was Hal’s Student.

Hal served in the Armed Services during World War II, from 1946 to 1947 stationed in the Philippines and distinguished himself as a Tech Sergeant handling heavy artillery.  After his discharge, he resumed working and finished his education.  Hal managed a toy store chain, worked nights and the GM Plant, and earned his Master’s.

His children were active in Little League and Scouting, so Hal became a coach and Boy Scout Chairman.  Locally, he was a member of the Ramapo Lodge 485 of Knights of Pythias.  He was an avid gardener and NY Ranger fan.

He is predeceased by his wife, Pam (2011) and son Brock (2019) He is survived by his children, Erik and wife, Linda, Don, and Randi Liberati and husband, Anthony; grandchildren, Autumn, Lucas, Katina, Matt, Tim, Elizabeth, Jon, great-grandson, Alex and siblings, Walter, Sonia, John and Elizabeth.

Visiting is Wednesday, March 11, 2020 from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. Funeral service 11:00 AM at the Brick Church, Spring Valley, NY.  Burial will follow at Frederick Loescher Veterans Cemetery, New Hempstead.
