Guy M. Smith (Cubby) of Pomona, a friend to all, and a lifelong Rockland County resident passed away Saturday, March 28, 2020, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern after a brief illness. He was 68.
For many years, Cubby, as everyone knew him, tended bar at the Deer Head Inn. Before retiring, he worked as a courier for MRI; and most recently he became a volunteer driver for the Rockland Senior Volunteer Program.
Cubby loved sports, especially the New York Mets, and played softball for decades in the “bar league” at the Deer Head, as well as in other leagues around the county. Quick to make others laugh with a silly noise or a goofy joke, he spoke to anyone he met like a long-time friend. He will be remembered for his generosity and his sense of humor.
Guy M. Smith was born in Suffern and was a graduate of Spring Valley High School.
He is survived by his sisters Candace Podgradski, of Pomona, and Robin Smith (Margaret Cruz) of Pomona; his brother Kelly Smith (Susan) of Conesville, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews who he adored, most notable Larry Franzke, the “son” he never had, of Willow Spring, NC. He was predeceased by his sister, Sherry McGill.
Memorial visiting will be held Saturday May 1, 2021 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home Inc.
