Gregory F. Whalen, age 79, passed away Monday, February 23, 2026 in Suffern, New York.
He was born on April 9, 1946, in the Fordham section of the Bronx. Greg was the son of Francis and Eleanor Whalen. He was educated at St Nicholas of Tolentine and later attended Iona College on a basketball scholarship.
Greg proudly served his country in the United States Navy, joining in 1966 and receiving an honorable discharge in 1969. Following his military service, he dedicated twenty years of his life to public service as a New York City Transit Police Officer, serving from October 1973 until his retirement in October 1993.
Known to many as much more than his profession, Greg was a bartender and a trusted friend. He had a gift for giving great advice, offering a listening ear, and making everyone feel welcome.
He was deeply loved by the many friends he made throughout his life and will be remembered for his warmth, humor, and his generosity. He was a loving husband, devoted father, and a cherished “Pop Pop”.
Greg is survived by his beloved wife, Maureen; his son, Greg; his daughter-in-law, Gina, and his prized grandchildren, Cole and Cora.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 2, at 10:00 AM at St Aedan’s R.C. Church.
In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorial donations in Greg’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project
Gregory will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all whose lives he touched.
