Gary Amann Obituary

We are heartbroken to announce the death of our husband, father and beloved grandfather Gary Lee Amann. Gary passed away on Saturday, September 14 at age 77 after a long and courageous three year battle with cancer.

Gary was born at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, New York on August 4, 1947 to Helen and James Amann and was the youngest of 3 sons. He was a lifetime resident of both Pearl River and Spring Valley, New York. He was a graduate of Pearl River High School, Rockland Community College and Empire State College.

Gary was owner and operator of Amann’s Welding for over 50 years and was well known throughout the county for being extremely talented at what he did. His love for his craft and willingness to pass on his knowledge of welding caused him to want to get into teaching. Over his career he taught welding to hundreds of young men and women at Duchess Community College, Westchester BOCES and Rockland BOCES: a skill that many went on to master and now support their families. To keep himself busy during his semi-retirement, he also became a welding inspector for Fairway Testing in Stony Point, New York.

Gary was a long time car enthusiast since he was able to drive. Over the years he participated in many car shows and displayed his 1932 Ford Pickup, 1923 Model T and 1965 Corvette Stingray . He also enjoyed going to flea markets and spending weekends antiquing with his wife and friends. He even had the pleasure of going to the Antique Roadshow. He had a passion for building rock walls, as any of his neighbors can attest to, having watched him spend five years building a magnificent one out in front of his home. During his marriage he also acquired the love of travel, having been fortunate enough to travel to many exotic foreign lands with his wife Linda and his two children. Among his favorites being Spain, Italy and China.

Gary was most happy spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, having coffee with his friends at Moe’s or under the Chestnut Ridge Gazebo, hanging out in his garage and eating ice cream.

He is survived by his wife and high school sweetheart of 54 years, Linda, his daughter Kimberly Amann and her husband Kenneth Wright of Vienna , VA,  his son Shawn Amann and his wife Aimee Amann of Yardley, PA and three beautiful grandchildren, Isabella, Alex and Harrison. Also surviving him are his brothers, James Amann and wife Margie, Nanuet, Peter Amann and his partner Terri,Greenwood Lake, brother in law Robert Hoene and wife Judith, Littleton, CO  and numerous nieces and nephews. Gary is predeceased by his parents, Helen Steiner Amann and his father James Amann.
