FDNY Captain Frederick S. Simms died on Thursday, June 12, 2025 after a long and courageous battle with 9/11 cancer. He was 49 years old. Freddie was born on July 24, 1975, in Nyack, New York to Frederick R. & Kathleen Simms. He lived in Tappan, New York and graduated from Tappan Zee High School in 1993. Freddie went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in communication arts from The University of Scranton in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1997. In 2001, Freddie joined the Fire Department of New York, where he served the city of New York for 22 years. Freddie married the love of his life, Jill, nee Werner, in June of 2006. They were married 18 years and lived in Pearl River, New York. Freddie served his local community as a member of the Volunteer Fire Association of Tappan for over 27 years. During his tenure there, he served as Chief of the Tappan Fire Department from 2014-2016. Additionally, he served the County of Rockland as a Fire Coordinator, was part of the Orangetown Chief’s Council, the Orangetown Emergency Management Team and was a NYS Fire Instructor at The Rockland County Fire Training Center. He was a devoted husband, son, brother, uncle and friend. Freddie loved golf, the beach, fishing, NY sports teams and of course the FDNY. During his career, Freddie was a beloved firefighter and respected officer. Freddie began his career at Ladder 58 in the Bronx, was promoted to Lieutenant and worked at Ladder 40 in Harlem and returned to Ladder 58 as a Captain. Freddie will be remembered most for his kind heart and generous spirit. He always put the needs of others before his own. Freddie is survived by his wife Jill, his parents Frederick & Kathleen, his sister Julie (Matt) Horner, in-laws Ronald and Colleen Werner, sister-in-law Colleen (Kenneth) Roberts, nieces Siobhan & Fiona, and nephews Liam & Dylan.
