Evelyn (Murphy) Garrity

Evelyn Garrity, nee Murphy - of Pearl River, NY; originally from Bekan, Co Mayo passed away on November 2, 2022, at The Joe Raso Hospice Residence in New City, NY. Evelyn is finally reunited with her beloved son, Declan Gerard, who passed away in 1975 at the age of 7 months and is buried in Knock, Co. Mayo.
Evelyn was born on February 19, 1943 in Bekan, Co Mayo to Martin Murphy and Margaret (Peg) nee Freeley. She was the third eldest of 14 children. Evelyn attended Bekan National School and Secondary school in Ballyhaunis. She emigrated from Ireland in 1961 with her brother, Raymond. They both settled in Chicago, IL where Evelyn worked at the Sears corporate office in the 60’s.

Evelyn met her husband Vincent in 1962 and they married on May 1, 1965. Their oldest son, Kevin, was born in Chicago in 1968. They moved back to Ireland in 1969 and settled in Cloonacurry, Knock, Co. Mayo. The other 7 children Caroline, George, Pauline, Declan, Gail, Regina and Brendan were born in Ireland. Vince and Evelyn moved back to America and settled in Pearl River, NY. 

Evelyn will be remembered for her sense of humor, style, daily walks and gardening skills. A beloved friend to many, Evelyn enjoyed country music and dancing. She adored her family and was extremely proud of each of her children. She was a woman of strong faith and loved attending mass in Bekan and Knock during her years in Ireland and St. Margaret’s in Pearl River. Evelyn loved to travel and lived life to the fullest!

Evelyn is survived by her husband, Vince, and their 7 children Kevin, Caroline, George, Pauline, Gail, Regina and Brendan; Daughter-in-Law, Colleen Garrity; Sons-in-Law Michael O’ Sullivan, Joe Cunningham and Henry Coyle; 16 grandchildren Sean, Emily, Lauryn and Katie O’Sullivan; Festus Jr., Karen and Tommy Folan; Jenna, Conor, Liam and Claire Cunningham; Aisling Garrity; Shannon, Dylan, Regan and Quinn Garrity.

Evelyn is also survived by her siblings Mary Jo, Pauline, Joan, Paddy, Martin, Michael, Connie, Noreen, John, and Brendan. Evelyn is preceded in death by parents Martin and Peg Murphy, and siblings Vincent, Raymond and Jerome Murphy.

Visiting will be held Friday, November 4, 2022 from 6PM to 9PM at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home Inc. 100 Franklin Ave. Pearl River, NY.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated  10:00 AM Saturday, November 5, 2022 at St. Margaret R.C. Church 115 West Central Ave. Pearl River, NY. Burial will follow at Rockland Cemetery Sparkill, NY.
