Daniel Collins

Daniel Collins, a long time resident of Pearl River, died after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease on
Friday November 27, 2020 at the Jewish Home in River Vale, NJ. He was 84.
Mr. Collins was the sole proprietor of Collins Safety Driving School for 30 years. Previously, he taught
History at Pearl River High School, as well as other high schools. He loved teaching and meeting new
people.
Mr. Collins was born July 18, 1936 in Bronx, NY to John and Catherine Collins. He graduated from Iona
College with a Bachelor’s of Education and History in 1958. Drafted into the US Army, he served from
1958-1964. Upon his return, he attended Long Island University and received a Masters’ in Education
and continued to St. John’s University to achieve an MBA in Economics.
He married Elizabeth (Betty) on June 29, 1963 in Brooklyn. They have lived in Pearl River for the past 50
years. Dan was active in the St. Margaret’s Church community helping on many projects, especially
calling bingo. He will be remembered for his patience and unflappable style while teaching Driver’s
Education around Rockland and Westchester counties. He enjoyed spending time with his family,
traveling, and playing golf with his friends.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth (Betty), two daughters and son-in-law: Tracey Carey,
Laura and Jeff Gundermann. Alexandra and Stephanie Gundermann are his beloved granddaughters.
Mr. Collins was predeceased by his parents John and Catherine Collins, brothers Thomas and John
Collins and his cousin Owen O’Callahan of Pearl River.
The funeral mass will be held on Tuesday December 1, 2020 at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Pearl
River, NY at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.
