Daniel Callanan Obituary

Daniel Joseph Callanan of Pearl River, NY, passed away peacefully at home on January 22, 2021 at the age of 81, lovingly surrounded by his wife Rose and their six children. In his passing, Dan was reunited with his son Danny who predeceased him in 1966.

Dan was born in Manhattan on January 12, 1940 to Daniel and Margaret Callanan.  Dan grew up in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, and graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School before attending Pace University. He was a systems analyst and manager at IBM until his retirement in 1993.

Dan married the love of his life and wife of 58-years, Rose Finnegan in 1962.  In 1969 the family moved from the Bronx to Pearl River where they made many lifelong friends. Dan was very active in St. Margaret's Parish, and volunteered countless hours to various youth sports programs. Dan was a fixture on the sidelines at his kids’ and grandkids’ sporting events.  He enjoyed sending notes of faith and encouragement to each of his grandkids, especially during their college years, and he loved nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren.  Family get-togethers and summer vacations at LBI were among his greatest joys.

Dan was proud of his Irish heritage, and he was a long-time member of A.O.H. Division 3 in Pearl River.  As a founding member of the Hibernian House, Dan was the ¨Master Chef¨ where he prepared countless meals at various Senior Citizen luncheons.

Dan will be remembered for his commitment to his Catholic faith, his love of country, his conservative values, his heartfelt generosity, and his dedication to his family and friends.  He will be deeply missed.

Dan is survived by his wife Rose, their children Jeanne(Ivan), Kathleen(Eddie), Maureen(Ed) Christine (Tom), John(Mary Lynn) and Tim(Mary Jo); and 19 grandchildren: Christopher, Caroline, Kevin, Danny, Sean, Brian, Ben, Bridget, Michael, Brendan, Daniel, Jack, Julia, Mary Kate, Johnny, Rosie, Maeve, Kiera and Timmy; his sister Maureen, brothers Jack and Dennis, ¨brother” Pat Finnegan, his Aunt Dot, and many cousins and nieces and nephews.

Dan was predeceased by his brothers Tommy and Billy.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM, Friday, January 29, 2021 at St. Margaret R. C. Church, Pearl River.  Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Visiting is Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home Inc.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dan´s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, or Tunnel to Towers Foundation, as Dan was a loyal supporter of both charities.
