Ciaran Green Obituary

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our precious son and brother Ciaran Gerard Green.  Ciaran died unexpectedly in his dorm room at Iona University on December 7th, 2022 from natural causes.

Ciaran was born at Long Island Jewish Hospital on March 2nd, 2000 to Shane and Nadine Green.  He was the oldest of four children.  Ciaran moved to Pearl River in 2007 and attended Lincoln Avenue Elementary School.   He graduated from Pearl River High School in 2018.  During his junior year he had the opportunity to spend a week at Iona University experiencing college life and participating in a college class.  He made many new friends that week.  He returned home knowing that Iona was his home away from home and with a clear decision to major in psychology.  Despite all of Ciaran’s obstacles, he graduated from Iona University with his graduating class in 2022. Ciaran was also a proud member of AOH Division 3.  It was there he found many friendships that he treasured. He lived by and cherished their motto of Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity.

Ciaran’s family knew he was very special and a gift from God from the moment he was born.

Ciaran was a young man who faced many challenges in his life.  He was diagnosed with Escobar Syndrome which effects muscles and joints as well as the respiratory system.  Ciaran had his first surgery at 2 weeks old.  He would endure many more surgeries throughout his life disrupting his Middle School and High School years.  He faced each surgery with strength and grace.  He lived with chronic pain, but always had a smile and a positive attitude.  Ciaran was a person with courage.  He constantly pushed himself outside of his comfort zone.  It was on Ciaran’s first trip to Lourdes in 2014 with the Lourdes Kids of Rockland, as one of their first pilgrims, that he met Detective Stephen McDonald.  In the time he spent in Lourdes with Detective McDonald, Ciaran realized he was here for a reason and he chose to live every day to the fullest. An accomplishment that Ciaran was so proud of was that he traveled to Ireland independently.  It was on his first trip to Ireland that his love for his Irish heritage grew and he came to know how important family is.  He would return to Ireland and have the opportunity to travel to various counties experiencing his Irish history.  He also returned to Lourdes as a Jet Setter and again as part of the team.  Ciaran carried a message of love, kindness, compassion, and acceptance.  These four qualities were very important to him.  Two things he believed in passionately were “Infinite Love Always” and “For A Reason.” Nothing was by chance; he believed in God’s plan Ciaran always made time to talk with you and make you feel special.  Ciaran created bonds with people wherever he went, with folks from all walks of life.  He had time for everyone.  When Ciaran talked to you, it felt like you were the only person in the room no matter how busy or noisy it got.  With this ability in his tool belt, he not only built meaningful relationships with those closest to him, but the many doctors and nurses who helped take care of him.  Even drowsy and sore after his many surgeries or after a long early morning drive to get to the doctor’s office, Ciaran created lasting relationships with each nurse and doctor.  Ciaran became far more than a patient to them.

Ciaran had an intense way of recognizing a spark of goodness in everyone and was able to help people see it for themselves.  While at Iona University he was the one who always checked in on his friends, always putting them first. He was a night owl and while at home, long after his parents were asleep, he would make the rounds to each of his siblings, Colin, Kyle, and Aisleen.  Sitting at the edge of their beds, he would talk with them and offer big brother advice.  While at school he worked as a counselor for a suicide hotline.  Soon after starting, he was given an outstanding review from his supervisor on how well he handled stressful situations and spoke to people he came in contact with.  Ciaran was working matriculating toward his Master’s Degree.  His dream was to then continue for his Doctorate and to open his own practice, helping as many people as he possibly could.

What Ciaran meant to his family, his friends, and his community cannot be expressed in words.  It is a feeling that something seems to be missing every day and it is in those quiet moments that the silence on his end now rings out the loudest.  While we know he is out there listening to us and guiding us in his own way, while still probably rolling his eyes at his parents and siblings, our world will never be the same without him here.
