Brother Patrick Ryan, OCSO Obituary


Brother Patrick Ryan, OCSO, a Trappist monk, died on September 19, 2021,  in Illah, Nigeria, Africa.
Brother Patrick had spent the last six years at Holy Cross Monastery Nigeria, teaching the Cistercian way of life to the young monks there.
He loved Nigerians and their culture and they loved him right back.
Before going to Nigeria Brother Patrick was a monk at Our Lady of the Genesee Abbey, Piffard, NY for over fifty years.While there he taught several monastic classes and traveled to many other Cistercian monasteries to teach. Teaching was a profession he loved. He also served as infirmarian at The Abbey of the Genesee, tending to the needs of the sick and dying members of his community.
Brother Patrick was a proud Bronx boy, often recounting memories of growing up in the Parkchester section of the borough. He loved playing baseball and going to Yankee Stadium and shooting hoops in "The Shuff."
He graduated from St. Helena High School in 1960 and also attended Fordham University and received an MA degree in Medieval Studies from Western Michigan University.
He is survived by siblings: Jack (Elaine), Grosse Pointe Park, MI; Julie (Charlie, deceased), Pearl River , NY; Jim (Libby), Brooklyn , NY. He is predeceased by brother Fr. Daniel J. Ryan. 
He is also survived  by several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews who cherished their "Monkle Pat."
